Euphorbia tirucalli Stem Extract as Anti-bacterial Substance for Antispetic Gel
Cuts and burns are susceptible to bacterial infections. One of the ways to prevent infections is by giving antiseptic. The antiseptic can be made of both chemical substances and natural substances. That inspired three YSU students at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences to conduct research on the anti bacterial compounds of Euphorbia tirucalli for preventing Staphylococcus aureus infections by making it in the form of antiseptic gel.
Based on some research conducted on Euphorbia tirucalli, Euphorbiatirucalli extract contains glycoside, sapogenin, and elagat acid.
The research stages included sample making and formulation, and then effectiveness test of the antibacterial substance on Staphylococcus aureus by making the medium of growth. Then the testing of the formula to lab rats to find out the effects of determined concentrations of Euphorbiatirucalli extracts on the cuts.
The sampling and formulating was done using aloevera gel extract at first, but then they used gel from CMC-Na, Nipagin, and Glycerol. It was due to oxidation on the antiseptic gel formula of which colour was brownish green instead of dark green. After the use of the second medium, they obtained the concentrations for the extract. There were 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% concentrations which were compared to positive control (Batadine) and negative control.
“The test revealed that the most effective concentration of Euphorbiatirucalli extract to inhibit the growth of Staphylococcus aureus is 75% with 3.25 cm for the inhibition zone diameter.”
