A Transfer Credit Students Learning Experience in PSU

Studying abroad in Thailand was a life changing experience we ever had even it was only four months. Our University in Thailand was Prince of Songkhla University (PSU) which is one of the best five university in Thailand. Our friends in Indonesia usually asked us how Thailand is. The first thing that comes into our mind is the Thailand people is very polite. We used to listen people say saawat dii which is greeting in Thailand and people usually smile after that, even though we do not know the person. So that is why this peaceful country is called land of smiles.

Living in the dormitory of PSU with other students from Thailand and other country made us realized that building good relationship with others is important. We met Students from Yaman, Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines, and so many who have different culture and language. This was literally encouraged us to develop our skill especially for life skill. Wedid respect and follow the life culture here to survive and get closer with the people. The environment was completely different from anywhere we had ever experienced. A good studying environment here and the facilities enhanced us to be more focus and reach more than what we can gain in learning activity before.

Other advantage which we got was having a great experience to do our research here. We, as chemistry student, were very helped in doing research because the Lecturer support us. They permitted us to utilize the facilities to provide successful research. We should be thankful for this opportunity.

Beside of those challenges, we actually did not survive alone. The name is Permitha (PerhimpunanMahasiswa Indonesia Thailand) who help us to start our study and most of things we should know and do here. There were many activities of Permitha we can join with such as ASEAN Week, International Student Affair, and Indonesia Independence Day in Consulate of Indonesia in Songkhla. Same as Permitha, PSU also let us to join some activities like English Day. There, we were asked for being a tutor for PSU student to speak English.

Overall, studying abroad in PSU Thailand has been the best experience of ourlife. We have to say that studying abroad gave us a new outlook and perception on life and other cultures around us. We hope everyone can get opportunity to experience a meaningful education abroad experience too. (Reported by Novi Ambar Sari & Retna Widyaningrum)

Guest Lecture from Prince of Songkla University (PSU), Thailand

On May 16th to  20th, 2016, Department of Chemistry Education YSU accepted guest lecturers from The Prince of Songkla University, Prof. Dr. Warakorn Limbut. The main objective of the Guest lecturing program was to increase the motivation of the participants to grow towards an international level. Also, it is expected that there will be a  cooperation or joint research and sharing information about the recent developments of chemistry. On this occasion, Prof. Dr. Warakorn Limbut delivered a big topic of the Invention of electrochemistry Apparatus for Chemistry Classroom. The topic was divided into specific sub-topics, namely:

1.       Electrolysis of Water: Experimental Principle + + Design and Fabrication an Electrolyte Hydrogen Generator

2.       Electroless Plating of Silver: Principle + Experimental + Design and Fabrication a Mirror Glass

3.       Electroless Plating of Silver: Principle + Experimental + Design and Fabrication a Gold Electroplating Pen

In each session, all participants (both students and faculty) were very enthusiastic about the event.  An active and interesting discussions happen every session. At the end of the activity, Prof. Dr. Warakorn Limbut donated electroplating equipment which is especially brought from Thailand to be used as a learning tool for chemistry students who pursue these fields.

Sit-In Program in UPSI

On 4 - May 14, 2016, as many as 26 students of Chemistry Education Program, YSU and 1 supervisor, Erfan Priyambodo, M.Sc., implement Sit-in program at Jabatan Kimia Fakulti Sains dan MAtematik Universitas Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) Malaysia. This program is an annual program conducted by International Class of Chemical Education Program, YSU. The first day in UPSI,  the students were welcomed by the Dean of FSM UPSI, Prof Madya Dr. Zulkifley Mohamed, and the whole  faculty of Chemistry Department, UPSI. In his speech, Dean of FSM UPSI UPSI voiced that they are very pleased with the arrival of students from UNY and hope that these activities can be continued in the coming years.

On the second day, lecturers from UNY gave a lecture to UPSI students on topics “Student's misconception in Chemistry Teacing and Learning”. On the third day onwards, students from UNY followed an UPSI class and visited laboratories and various research centers in UPSI. The event was ended with the collaboration of cultural performances between UNY and UPSI students who performed the culture of each country.

International Teaching Practical at SMK Taman Desa Skudai, Johor Bahru, Malaysia

Yogyakarta State University establish cooperation with universities from other countries in order to realize the vision and mission of being a World Class University. One of the cooperation programs was the cooperation of Yogyakarta State University and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). This program is called the International Teaching Practice (Praktik Pengalaman Lapangan). This year was the fourth year of the program implementation. There are 6 students who have passed the selection organized by the Office of International Affairs and Partnership Yogyakarta State University. Delegation of Chemistry Education Department is Krisna Raditya Pratama (Class of International Chemistry Education 2013).

Krisna Raditya Pratama was given the task to implement practical teaching at SMK Taman Desa Skudai, Johor Bahru Malaysia. The school is a public school that consists of 5 levels. They start to learn chemistry at level 4 and level 5 is the final stage. Some activities that were carried out in the schools are an observation of learning activities, teaching practice in the classroom, teach in relief class, helping the school administration, create works of art (anti-drug poster), and also introduce Indonesian culture to students at the SMK Taman Desa Skudai. Additionally, UTM also facilitates edu-tourism by providing the opportunity to visit historical places in Malaysia and Singapore.

The learning process in Malaysia is always using expository method. The school’s facilities are limited and it’s a challenge for both teachers and students because students tend to be passive pay and less attention to the teacher. So, using the chance of teaching Chemistry at that time, Krisna Raditya Pratama introduce virtual lab, demonstrating a simple test of "Secret Letter Experiment" and apply the Team Game Tournament Method to provide Level 4 students in understanding the material of Acid and Base with the language of instruction in English and Malay. The result of doing this performance in the classroom is really great. Many students show interest and they start to be active and become more eager to learn. It proves that this method –which hasn’t have used in the classroom as model and learning method- is good to improve student’s way of learning.
